There’s a lot to worry about, take Shingles off the list.
Are you 50+? It’s time to protect yourself from Shingles
Isn’t Shingles just like Chickenpox? Is it really that bad if I get it?
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, but it’s not contagious like chickenpox. It causes a painful skin rash, usually with blisters, and possibly fever, headache, chills, or upset stomach. The older you get the higher the probability of getting Shingles becomes, and what’s worse is the risk of complications also increases. The most common issue is a long-term nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). This can last months and possibly even years after the rash disappears. This pain can be severe and debilitating.
When can I get the immunization and why should I get the shot at Pennyrile Health Department?
We recommend any adult 50 years and older schedule to get immunized against Shingles. Also, if you are 19 years and older with a weakened immune system because of disease or treatments, please give us a call or talk with your health care provider to see if you should go ahead and get this immunization.
Many health care providers don’t keep the shingles vaccine in stock. We are your local option, many times we are able to offer you more payment options than other locations or it may actually be free for you.
Should I talk to my health care provider first?
Yes, especially if you are pregnant, currently experiencing an episode of shingles, if you’ve had an allergic reaction to a previous dose of the shingles vaccine or have any type of life-threatening allergy.
I’m not sure about this, where can I learn more?
We welcome your questions because this is YOUR health we’re talking about. Your local health department is here to help prevent sickness first and foremost, so please give us a call. You can also learn more from the CDC here.
